Candidate Questionnaire, Parking Code, and Halloween Ride

Candidate Questionnaire, Parking Code, and Halloween Ride

A few things for this month, including the 2nd annual Halloween parade:

City Things

🇺🇸 Learn about the candidates
We're less than 1 month out from Election Day, November 5. Remember you can vote early during the week at City Hall. (Weekend early voting will start at the end of the month.) So that you're informed, we asked City Council candidates, Laura Downs and John Murphy, to respond to a few questions that reflect the Falls Church Forward pillars. Note that we are publishing these without any edits or fact-checks.

Also, as the priorities of Bike Falls Church and Falls Church Climate Action Network (FCCAN) align well with our pillars, here are the links to these other civic organizations' candidate questionnaires:

🚘🅿️ Parking Requirements
Did you know our current zoning code requires a business to add more parking if they set up two pinball machines? Or that a civic group in a 1,500 sq ft space needs to provide 25 parking spots? The City is considering changes to the zoning ordinance to lower the number of parking spaces required for new businesses and organizations opening in old buildings— email Pat and Naudy to be an official “signer” of an FCF letter to City Council supporting these changes (please let us know by Monday, October 21)! This could be a big win to attract new and diverse independent businesses, while preserving older spaces, creating better places for people and small businesses, producing a more vibrant and walkable downtown area that supports more pedestrians, cyclists, and public transit. Check out more information about the changes to the code here. You can also send in your own public comment or speak the night of the final vote (Monday, October 28).

Fun Things

🍁Leave the Leaves
Thanks to all the volunteers who have been walking and flyering the neighborhoods with the Leave the Leaves campaign. We've reached almost 1700 homes already! You might have seen the yard signs across the city too. We had a fun happy hour kicking off the campaign last weekend at Solace. We could use a 4-5 more volunteers to finish up the 50 routes (just a 1 hour commitment!). And if you're interested in learning more about leaving some/all leaves, join the October 20 virtual Q&A event with experts.

🎃Halloween Bike Parade
Join us on Sunday, October 27 for our 2nd annual Halloween Bike Parade at Cherry Hill Park. Come in costume and in your choice of locomotion (bikes, scooters, rollerblades, sneakers...). Ride departs at 430 pm with s'mores to follow in the Cherry Hill picnic pavilion afterwards. If you don't have a bike handy, you can rent a bike from the Capital Bikeshare station right on Park Ave. RSVP here so we can plan.
